Happy Birthday and may the muse stay with you!

Funny, I was out at a holiday celebration today and just as I was leaving someone told me that I should see a movie he recommended. When he told me what it was about, I immediately thought about you. Then I came straight home, got online, and the first thing I see is that it is your birthday tomorrow. Hmm, you gotta wonder.

Anyway, I told him I didn't think I could watch the movie because it sounded way too sad and I knew I'd be bawling all through it. It is called "Mine" and it is about owners who had to leave their dogs behind during the Katrina rescue, with some later being reunited, others having custody battles with the new owners, etc.

Just popping in to let y'all know I'm still around and to wish a Happy Birthday to our favorite real Rat! Yeah, I know you'll probably be too busy to even see this for months, Alex, but just wanted to wish you well. And here's hoping that you'll find bits of time here and there to add to your m/k novella. :-)

There are 2 people on the cover of this week's new TV Guide that look like they are airbrushed enough to take 10 years off them.  I took a second look and decided that it must be DD and GA, promoting the release of the movie July 25.  Just a couple of quotes from the article:  Frank Spotniz says "Teh emotional story of Mulder and Scully is really the heart of the movie.  It's about their love story."  And he said about the 2 actors working together again "After so long an absence, they were determned to bring everthing they could to their work together.  Never more so than in their final scene, which was so powerful that it hushed the crew and brought tears to my eyes."  Hmm.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, whichever way it turns out, he and CC worked very hard on the script years ago, and put a lot of effort into details and the plot.  But the "Okay" on the movie took years, so by the time they finally got the Go Ahead to make it, they couldn't find the script they had worked so hard on and had to rush another one.  He says "There's nothing like a deadline to focus the mind."  Well, I've been there and I can appreciate that a deadline can force creativity, but hopefully the plot won't seem like a rush job.  CC piped in when asked if the Lone Gunmen or Skinner would be in the movie: "You will see someone from the series who is not Mulder or Scully.  Someone or Someones.

Surreal day today.  The bulk of the day involved helping my 2 colleagues get ready to teach a class at Northern Illinois University  PowerPoints were reviewed, notes altered, and I was preparing to shove them out the door early enough so that they could make the long drive through winter potholes and traffic delays and make it in time for class.  That’s when one of their students called us and told us of the breaking story of the gunman on campus.  Ten minutes later, the school’s website said all classes were cancelled for that night.  Most of my coworkers’ students were driving in to class from the suburbs, so we had to form a telephone tree to call all of them, tell them what was happening on campus, and not to drive to class.  Soon after, the news was broadcasting speculative but incorrect reports, namely that the gunman shot 13 people in the head in an auditorium, then went across the square to the library, shot some more people, and was still at large.  People on campus thought he was at large and they were all running for whatever building was closest.  Our current student, doing a practicum at our site, will be graduating from N.I.U. this spring.  She called her dad, who is the chairman of the psychology department at N.I.U.  He said he couldn’t talk because he was in the process of running into a building for safety.  My student started to shake and cry, and I tried to comfort her by telling her that her dad was safe, he made it into a building.  Turns out the gunman never left the auditorium before turning the gun on himself, but we didn't know that at the time.  So far 6 dead, including the gunman, and 16 others wounded.  Sorry for the downer, but it’s bizarre to watch the story unfold about my Alma Mata, which happens to be where my student is enrolled, where her dad is, and where my colleagues were about to drive off to. tonight.
